About Bek

Bek Wermut became a Registered Music Therapist in 2007 after completing a Graduate Diploma in Music Therapy at UTS, and previously a BA in Music and Psychology at Sydney University.

She studied classical piano from an early age and later went on to learn guitar and percussion. Through her music therapy studies Bek developed a passion for hand drumming and rhythm facilitation, it's huge range of applications and multitude of benefits.

Bek went on to train extensively in rhythm facilitation with world renowned drummer and father of the modern drum circle movement, Arthur Hull, completing all levels of training and hosting his Sydney training programs. She has also trained with US based music therapist Christine Stevens, a global leader in the field of therapeutic drumming, as well as being an accredited facilitator of

the Holyoake DRUMBEAT program and Rhythm2Recovery model.

Bek is also a teacher trainer in the Rhythm2Recovery model, a CBT based drumming program that combines drumming activities with verbal reflection on a range of life themes in order to meet a wide array of social and emotional learning outcomes for diverse population groups.

She has supervised and mentored a number of music therapy students, facilitated music therapist and staff training programs in therapeutic rhythm facilitation for organisations such as The Sydney Children’s Hospital, The Starlight Foundation and the Australian Music Therapy Association, as well as guest lecturing on Drum Circle Facilitation for the Music Therapy programs at UTS and WSU.

Bek offers individually tailored programs to suit mental health, workplace and community settings. Rhythmosis' programs are designed to use rhythm and music to uplift, empower, inspire and connect people to each other and themselves and create positive shifts on a social, emotional, mental and spiritual level.

Philosophy

Bek creates a comfortable and supportive environment whereby people are encouraged to play, explore and express themselves through music and where there are no wrong notes. Clients can participate at a level in which they feel comfortable, with the focus being on creating a positive and rewarding experience and minimising anxiety rather than challenging people, putting them on the spot or making people do something they don’t want to do. Bek creates a culture whereby everyone’s ‘voice’ is equally valued and programs are adapted based on the needs, preferences and group dynamics in the moment.

Rhythmosis programs engage fun, easy and safe methods to facilitate and empower participants to find their own rhythm, creatively express themselves, listen to others, come together in harmony and connect with others in a positive way - both in rhythm and life!

Why Drumming?

You just have to think about how natural and easy it is to tap your foot to a great song or walk in time with music you hear to realise that humans are naturally rhythmical (whether we believe it or not!). Drumming is something we can all do with little or no instruction, so people are able to easily and immediately access the benefits of group music-making through rhythm play on drums and other percussion instruments.

Group drumming is implicitly creative, expressive, physical, co-operative, accessible to everyone regardless of age, race, religion, level of functioning, engages positive social skills, and is geared towards being fun and enjoyable, so many therapeutic outcomes are inbuilt into the activity.

Why drumming?

There is an increasing body of research that demonstrates the efficacy of group drumming to meet a wide range of objectives on a social, emotional, physical, cognitive and spiritual level. Some of these include increased self-esteem, improved relationships, improved cooperation, reduced social isolation, stress reduction, decreased anxiety, increased immune function and mood enhancement to name a few.
